Our Story
Stephen Scurlock and Grant Haworth have been friends for a long time. They both grew up in Great Harwood in Lancashire. Grant attended Norden High in Rishton and Stephen St Augustine’s in Billington. Their paths met when Stephen became an apprentice joiner for David Gaffing Ltd. Grant was also an apprentice at the time but one year older. The friendship began.
Stephen worked at the company for 6 months before leaving for a shop fitting company. Grant stayed working for Gaffings for the next 11 years. He progressed from the apprentice to site foreman. Running sites across the northwest from domestic extensions to £500,000.00 school and commercial projects. As Grant grew through the company, he experienced every aspect of the building process from foundation and underpinning skills to the second fix joinery and roofing. With the wealth of experience, he made the leap to become self employed and his own boss.
Stephen, on the other hand, left after 6 months and moved to Metcalf’s shopfitting and started to learn shopfitting joinery. The job involved a lot of working away, meaning long hours and working with various trades. Stephen had the opportunity to have a year in Australia. He packed his hammer and chisels and boarded a plane to Sydney. He experienced glass collecting in Sydney and the Gold Coast, working on domestic and commercial buildings as a joiner and form worker. Stephen returned with a plan, to get his licence and go back, unfortunately that didn’t happen. Stephen returned to shop fitting for a short period before moving towards maintenance engineering. He did this for 6 years before also becoming self-employed.
12 Years Later…
This is where the two once again joined forces 12 years later. They both worked on each other’s projects, combining the knowledge they had to create a great partnership. The opportunity arose to win a new client called {my} Dentist. They wanted us to take care of maintenance at their head office. After the meeting we had won the opportunity but needed to become a company! S&H maintenance was born on Stephen’s birthday, the 6th of July 2015. The very first job came through on that day also, so a great birthday present!
S&H Maintenance has since grown from the two directors to a 4 strong office staff and a 12-engineer team. We are now known as S&H Group due to the growth of the projects as well as the maintenance contracts we have. The main objective for S&H is to become a name companies and suppliers become to know, trust and admire for their professional work ethic and the excellent client customer service.
